Self-drive versus with-driver car rental

Last updated Oct 24, 2026

When a driver is worth the extra daily fee, when self-drive makes more sense, and how each is shown on 13C listings.

1. When a driver makes sense

A driver is usually priced as a fee per day on top of the car's daily rate. It pays off when you're new to Philippine roads, when your days are mostly in Cebu City, Mandaue or Lapu-Lapu where traffic and parking cost time, when you're a group that wants to relax, or for long one-day round trips where you'd otherwise drive tired. Drivers also know where to stop and how to handle checkpoints, ferries and parking. Agree in advance on the driver's hours per day, meals, and where they stay on an overnight trip.

2. When self-drive makes sense

Self-drive gives you freedom on multi-day trips: south to Moalboal and Oslob, north to Bantayan or the Malapascua ferry, or around another province. It's cheaper per day and you keep your own schedule. You need a valid license (a foreign license is accepted for 90 days from arrival), you're responsible for the car under the agreement, and you'll pay a security deposit. Driving is on the right, speed limits are low, and motorcycles are everywhere, so give yourself time.

3. How it looks on 13C

Every car on 13C says whether it's offered self-drive, with a driver, or both, and shows the driver fee per day when there is one. You can filter for cars with a driver on Find a car. When you request a booking you choose the option you want, and the rental agreement states it. If you're not sure, message the business first; they can propose a booking directly from the chat.
