What to check before accepting a rental car

Last updated Oct 24, 2026

A ten-minute walk-around at pickup that protects your deposit: photos, fuel, tyres, documents and what to agree in writing.

1. Paperwork first

  • Check that the plate number, make and model match your rental agreement.
  • Ask to see the current registration (OR/CR) and the insurance certificate; keep a photo of each.
  • Make sure the agreement's dates, rates, deposit, mileage and fuel terms are what you agreed. On 13C the signed agreement stays in your account.

2. The walk-around

  • Walk around the car with the business and photograph every panel, the bumpers, wheels, windshield and mirrors. Take a short video too; it's timestamped.
  • Note existing scratches and dents on the agreement or in the chat so they're on record before you drive off.
  • Check tyre tread and pressure, including the spare, and that the jack and tools are there.
  • Photograph the odometer and the fuel gauge.

3. Inside and running

  • Start the engine. Check the air-conditioning, lights, indicators, wipers, horn and seat belts.
  • Look for warning lights on the dashboard.
  • Ask how the fuel door, child locks and any dash cam or GPS tracker work.

4. Agree the return

Confirm the return time, place, fuel level expected and how the deposit is refunded. If anything is damaged during the rental, tell the business right away through the chat so there's a record. At return, repeat the photos before you hand over the keys.
